Center for Environmental
Information and Management
One of the key reasons for lack of progress on environmental
front is absence of scientific, accurate and objective data.
This stymies effective environmental action. The increasing
civic sensibility about environment is a tremendous opportunity
to reduce environmental damage provided we have more precise
information on the precise degree of damage and can fairly
attribute responsibility. Knowing how market capitalisation
of companies like Shell and Body Shop suffered at one stage
due to poor perception of their environment information, few
companies will show themselves to be polluters in public eyes.
It is for this reason that WEF has set up a Centre for Environmental
Information and Management( CEIM). The Centre aims to involve
both business and civil society in environmental action through
environment monitoring and indexing. It is designed to promote
environment friendly processes, products, practices and technology
among Indian business and industry and help businesses, benchmark
with the very best. It will also provide business to business
matchmaking service to help industry become more environment-friendly.
It will compile environment management indicators and disseminate
them nationwide through its website hariyali.org and will act
as a clearing house for all information relating to environment
management.
