Projects
Formation
of Peace Clubs
A
new environmental initiative called PEACE (Partnership
between Europe and Asia for Cleaner Environment) was established
recently under the chairmanship of Dr Madhav Mehra, President
WEF. This was a joint initiative between World Environment
Foundation and Institute of Directors. Mr Pradeep Chaturvedi,
a noted environmentalist and a UN specialist on energy
was appointed the Chief Coordinator of PEACE. The initiative
has been supported by several NGOs and industry organisations
both in Europe and Asia.

The objectives of PEACE include
institutionalising dialogue between European and Asian
stakeholders on environment friendly action and socially
sustainable issues between the two regions and involve
European organisations to help increase environment management
capacity in Asia by facilitating market based approaches
to environment protection, develop, promote and support
Asia-Europe Environmental R & D networks, formalisation
of policies, regulatory frameworks, management instruments
and financing mechanisms.
"Peace Clubs will be promoted
in every part o f India. It is time that all stakeholders
- the government, industry, NGOs and civil society joined
hands to find synergistic solutions to environmental problems"
says Dr Madhav Mehra.
Centre for Environmental
Information and Management
One of the key reasons for
lack of progress on environmental front is absence of
scientific, accurate and objective data. This stymies
effective environmental action. The increasing civic sensibility
about environment is a tremendous opportunity to reduce
environmental damage provided we have more precise information
on the precise degree of damage and can fairly attribute
responsibility. Knowing how market capitalisation of companies
like Shell and Body Shop suffered at one stage due to
poor perception of their environment information, few
companies will show themselves to be polluters in public
eyes. It is for this reason that WEF has set up a Centre
for Environmental Information and Management( CEIM).
PATHIC HEALTHCARE CENTRE
The need for dissemination
of information about the healing power of nature and its
capacity to fight diseases has never been so vital. There
have been so much calculated destruction of biodiversity
that the world will lose the very species that has made
the survival of homo- sapiens possible in the planet.
Some of the most promising wonder drugs come from nature.
History teaches us the folly of destroying species that
could benefit humanity.

SM Charitable Foundation has
set up a healthcare facility called PATHIC (Preventive
Action Through Health Information and Counselling) near
Kalindi Kunj in New Delhi. Crores of rupees are currently
spent on heart surgeries only because people are unaware
what leads to heart attacks. They have little information
that small changes in one's life style can free them completely
from heart ailments.

It is surprising how little
information is available on health. One can eat ones way
to healthy eating only if one has information on what
to eat and how food affects various ailments. Prevention
is far better than cure. PATHIC is primarily intended
to disseminate information on fighting diseases, encouraging
healthy life style, integrated living and family planning.
It is currently serving the villages around Delhi. SM
foundation proposes to set up such centres right across
the country.
