Environment Management
World Council
for Corporate Governance is an independent, not for profit,
international network established to help improve the quality
of corporate governance practices worldwide by promoting
greater transparency, integrity, equity, accountability
and societal responsibility. It believes that the tectonic
shift in public values has made social good a powerful competitive
differentiator and, therefore, corporate governance must
proactively pursue the issues of environmental and societal
responsibility to improve market capitalisation and create
sustainable wealth.
WCFCG
recently organised the 2nd International Conference
on Corporate Governance in Mumbai which was attended by
416 business leaders and policy makers from 20 countries.
There was a consensus that corporate governance codes need
to be rescripted to align with the imperatives of knowledge
economy. Markets of 21st century are driven by
aspirations of sustainability.
Sustainability and not profits has to become the
ultimate end game of the business.
World
Council for Corporate Governance together with World Environment
Foundation is launching an International Sustainability
Movement to sensitise the governments and businesses on
the enormous business opportunity because of the shift in
public values and demographic drivers.
The
launch of Indian Sustainability Movement is planned on 5th
June 2002 in New Delhi to synchronise with World Environment
Day. It will create awareness among businesses that environment
is the biggest business opportunity of 21st Century
and focus on the challenge of leveraging intellectual capital
to replace obsolete business models, obsolescent technologies
and unsustainable designs with those that are more innovative,
ecologically efficient, unleash demand and help kick start
the economy.
The
launch will be followed by a 3 day Environment Congress
beginning in Palampur (HP) which begins on 7 June 2002.
The theme of the Congress is “Sustainability through Good
Governance”. The Congress will be inaugurated by world’s
most venerated Noble Laureate, His Holiness the Dalai Lama
on 7th June 2002 who will also present the Golden
Peacock Awards on Environment Management, Environmental
Leadership and Life Time Achievements in Ecology. The
output of the environment congress will be presented to

Governance to be held in New Delhi on 27th and

Palampur,
situated about 530 km north-west of Delhi is close to Dharamasala,
the abode of the HH The Dalai Lama. Nestling in the divine
Himalayan valley, Palampur, the venue of the Congress, is
endowed with outstanding natural beauty, unspoilt by modernity.
Snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhar range in the foothills
of the Himalayas, rise dramatically just a few feet away
from this town, famous for its picturesque tea-gardens,
rolling meadows and waterfalls, which have inspired some
of the highly acclaimed paintings in the Kangra School of
Art.
The
Palampur Conference will be participated by 500 business
leaders, policy makers and opinion leaders and experts on
governance, environment, sustainability, corporate social
responsibility, corporate citizenship from 30 countries.
